Be Unlimited

Maria Kowch told me this story. Because it’s about unlimitedness, I’m taking liberties with the details.

Two brothers in the Mafia, arrested early in their careers, grow old in prison. One day, the older one is released and returns to his modest home in Queens. The garden is now overgrown with weeds and untilled. I am so old and the soil is so hard, he writes in a letter to his younger brother still in prison. If I could only get someone to till it, I could plant some flowers.

A week later, he looks out the back window, and the FBI is digging up the entire garden, six feet deep. Not finding what they’re looking for, they pack up their shovels and leave.

The next day he receives a letter from his younger brother: I leaked a tip to the feds that there was a body buried in the garden. Given my constraints, it was the best I could do.

There's more than one way to till a garden.

The goal of yoga is recognize your true self, which is beyond limitations. Our tendency, when we hit a wall, be it in a pose or in life, is to identify with our smaller, limited self. When this happens, it’s our choice to remain limited or drop into a state of awareness in which anything is possible.

Why do some people get their best ideas in the shower? Because they’re in a state of relaxation and receptivity, a space of awareness in which insights, revelations, transformations and miracles arise.
